Apply Neale's genre theory to your chosen television texts: The Bridge s3 ep1.

A nordic noir TV series crime drama 'The Bridge", takes place in a Scandinavian setting where it begins with a medium close up shot of the crime scene. Given that at the end of the episode we are left with unanswered questions, this makes it an open narrative with a linear narrative structure. A linear narrative structure means that the audience sees the events of the story unfolding in chronological order, starting at the beginning and ending with the conclusion of the story. However, since it is an open narrative, there has been no conclusion at the end of the episode. Throughout 'The Bridge' there have been many enigma codes: this can be seen as a 'puzzle' or 'mystery'; it is simply a theory (created by Barthes) to suggest how a text portrays a mystery to draw the audience, in which allows them to pose questions and as much become intrigues in the series. The visual codes of film noir is the chiaroscuro lighting with the low wide angles as well as the filming at night to depict an eerie atmosphere. Moreover, there are many action Coes which are shown throughout the episode such as the bomb explosion. This highlights the extremist actions that the son of Helen Anker show and could be a prime suspect. The bomb explosion also had a diegetic sound which is when both the audience and the characters are able to hear the sound effects. Furthermore, the sirens on the police and ambulance cars are also diegetic. Neale's genre theory is that genres such as action should include features that are similar so that the audience understands that it is an action series or film. In The Bridge, there are iconography of the police station, police badge and detective which further imply that the series is a crime drama.

Analyse the representation of gender in "the man" and "riptide"

Analyse the representation of gender in 'the man' and 'riptide' (800 words) In both music videos of "The Man'' by Taylor Swift and "Riptide" by Vance Joy, they both explore the theme of gender and have a similar way of representing the stereotypes that are involved. In riptide, there is a camera shot of a woman facing away from the camera whilst undressing; this indicates that she was unaware that she was being recorded which suggests that women are vulnerable and can easily be manipulated. In addition, this not only depicts women as weak and fragile, but it also sexualises them as recording a woman undressing and showing a lot of skin without their consent views them as objects where society (mostly men) are able to degrade and dehumanise them. PAPER 2 A TELEVISION : Life on Mars text analysis

 Summarise key points about s1e1 of Life on Mars: Genre: When watching the first episode of the first season of Life on Mars, I immediately knew that it was part of the crime genre due to the scenery it was set in and the upbeat music in the background. However, Life on Mars can be argued to be part of the sci-fi genre due to the fact that the main character (Sam Taylor) is seen to have travelled back 30 years to 1973 when, in the beginning, he states he that it was the year 2006. This is seen to be ironic for a typical crime drama as, according to Neale's genre theory, he believes that films and series' should include features that are similar which is different in this particular series as we do not typically associate crime and sci-fi in the same category.
