PAPER 1 A Key text : Beyonce FORMATION MUSIC VIDEO
Contexts:
Formation was shot in Los Angeles, California and it features references to Hurricane Katrina, antebellum and Louisiana Creole culture, police brutality, racism and black pride. The depiction of African Americans was praised due to the fact that they were not frequently seen in mainstream media. Some production context is that Formation was a lead single for the album lemonade and was released the day before Beyonce performed at the super bowl. The formation music video drawls historical parallels with reference to racism and slavery.
Star Persona:
Beyonce's performance shifts from moments of aggression to for example obscene hand gestures to make it more culturally recognisable and seems less loaded with political and social messages. She also engages with intersexuality within her music videos. There are low angle shots on Beyonce which shows how even through the racism she and other black people have faced, they are not afraid to still be a community and to strive to become strong. This proves how those within the mainstream media have no longer the right to control and exploit black people
Representation:
Beyonce is represented as a strong willed and independent woman; this is shown through her use of direct address by giving different insight on society views of women, also giving power to her culture, this is shown through her code of clothes and body language and being able to act more freely while going against society's standards. Her body and the way it relates to her star persona and her African American identity in the 1900s is a key element in her music video as it refers heavily to slavery. All ages, from around 6 – 70+ representing all ages as a whole, for example the three young black girls, showing their confidence and pride in the way they are with their afro’s etc, not to be put down or out of place due to society thinking differently.
