Plenary
What are the main differences between Hall and Perkins' theories?
- Hall believes that stereotyping is used to assert power while Perkins' theory is that some stereotypes are not always negative and that some can be positive and uplifting
- Perkins' says that stereotypes can be seen in one's group while Hall thinks that the one in power or someone in a different "group" stereotypes another group
What are the advantages/disadvantages of each theory?
Hall
Advantages:
- identifies what and who is targeted when stereotyping
- identifies who can use stereotypes against others
- identifies that stereotypes is mostly negative and puts a group of people into one category and focuses on that one area
Disadvantages:
- not only minorities can be affected by stereotypes
Perkins
Advantages:
- states that everyone can be stereotyped
- not only stereotypes are negative
- one minority group can stereotype their own
Disadvantages
- people can take offfence to "not all stereotypes are negative" as they could have been directly stereotyped by other people
